The award, granted by the World Entertainment Organization (WEO) to personalities who have made great contributions to music around the world, was handed over to Formell by WEO Director Danieo Cuxac.

Speaking with ACN, Formell said he was surprised because the WEO had chosen 10 candidates around the world and the award was only granted to three of them. “I’m very happy. This award is not only for me but for Cuba,” he stressed.

The two other personalities who were granted the award on this occasion were French Charles Aznavour and American Quincy Jones.

The official awarding ceremony will take place next August in Congo.

The Varadero 2008 Music Festival concluded on Sunday night with a concert by Cuban duet ‘Buena Fe’, Mexican group ‘Explosion Norteña’ and ‘Los Van Van’.
