In the first five months of the current year Las Tunas, located at some 690 kilometers to the east of Havana, is the province with the lowest rate in so important indicator, which is inferior in 1.7 to that of similar lapse in 2007.

A wire from the Cuban News Agency publishes the declarations of Doctor Viviana Gutiérrez, head of the Maternal-Infantile Department of the Direction of Health in the territory, who asserts that there were only four deaths in the last five months.

The success has been possible due to the solid work of the System of Public Health in Cuba -free for the whole population- and the reinforcement of the primary cares to the pregnant women who receive 17 diagnosis as average during their pregnancy.

Hardly three half a decade ago, Las Tunas had a children's mortality rate of 12.9 for each thousand births, the highest among the 14 provinces of Cuba, and in the stage from 2001 up to 2007 the rate has been even below the national average that was of 5.3 in the last two years.
