At the embassy, Raúl was welcomed by Ambassador Zhao Rongxian, to whom he offered his condolences as well as those of the leader of the Cuban people, Fidel.

Also visiting the embassy to express condolences were Juan Almeida Bosque, Abelardo Colomé Ibarra, Carlos Lage Dávila and Esteban Lazo Hernández, vice presidents of the Council of State. Also present were Commander of the Revolution Ramiro Valdés Menéndez, minister of informatics and communications; Álvaro López Miera, chief of staff of the Revolutionary Armed Forces; and Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque.
