Prima Ballerina Assoluta Alicia Alonso to receive the Golden Medal of Merit in Fine Arts from Spain
Following the proposal of the Minister for Culture César Antonio Molina, the council awarded the medals to the Cuban dancer, as well as to the actor from Malaga Antonio Banderas, the singer from Galicia Luz Casal, the conductor from Argenitna Daniel Barenboim, the designer from Galicia Roberto Verino and the Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli.

The Spanish Kings will hand over the awards this year in a ceremony in La Coruña.

Created in December 1969, the Gold Medal of Merit in Fine Arts were always handed in at the Prado Museum from Madrid until 1992, when ir was decided to descentralize the ceremony and to make it in the different autonomous communities.

Since then, the event has taken place in Andalusia, the Canary Islands, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and Leon, Valencia Community, Extremadura, Galicia and the Spanish capital.
