According to Melva Ruiz Pérez, director of the institution, the new ophthalmology center features six surgical wards and an operation theater. An excimer laser unit was installed for the correction of eye refractive defects like myopia, hypermetropy and astigmatism, as well as a tomograph.

Sancti Spirituss eye patients can also be assisted in any of the municipal polyclinics where modern equipments have been also installed.

Before the opening of this ophthalmology center, there were little possibilities for this kind of surgery in Sancti Spiritus, thus the amount of operations made in one year time were less than those so far made.
