Panama President Martin Torrijos:
On this fifth visit to the Island, the statesman recalled support by Cuba and other Latin American countries to help Panama recover sovereignty over the canal which they now try to modernize.

The visitor expressed thanks foráthe project that will keep alive the memory and spirit of solidarity that Omar Torrijos represented, for the brotherhood between Cuba, Panama and all Latin Americans.

President Martin Torrijos also laid a wreath with Cuban Government Minister Ricardo Cabrisas at the monument to Cuban National Hero Jose Marti (1853-1895).

During his visit 48-hour visit, Torrijos will meet with Cuban President Raul Castro and sign an energy cooperation agreement.

Martin Torrijos said he wished to make bilateral relations even more fruitful, and admitted they are at a great moment.

He also reminded that among his countrys many agreements with Cuba is Operation Miracle, that so far allowed 4,000 Panamanians to undergo eye surgery.

Cuba and Panama restored diplomatic ties in August 2005, when President Torrijos attended the first graduation of Panamanian students in Havana's Latin American School of Medical Sciences.
