The project developed by historians and architects from Holguin, restored much of its original values to the building and allowed its spaces to be used for its current corporate purpose.
The work of renovation included the repairing of the foundations, the elimination of cracks in the walls and changes in carpentry besides the works on the floors and painting of the interior and exterior walls, said Ernel Hernandez, architect of the National Agricultural Projects Company and one of the executors of the restoration.
Hernandez explained that among the main actions to take place is the rescue of the portal which maintained the arches, built during the 1920's.
Also retained are the mainstays of the building and the eaves tiles restored. The floor of the institution was replaced with flagstones equal to the originals.
Also included in the construction work was a new design for the outdoor areas, with the addition of a garden and space for the elderly to rest, and the remodelling of the kitchen for greater functionality.
Other buildings in Holguin have previously received the National Award for Restoration and Conservation of Monuments, including the archaeological site "Chorro de Maíta" and "Restaurante 1545".
This nomination has been awarded by the National Bureau of Cultural Heritage since 2003 to individuals or institutions with outstanding work in the preservation of historical memorabilia.
