Around 80 hectares of forest are cut down every year by the Ernesto Che Guevara enterprise, the Moa Nickel S.A and Rene Ramos Latour, while 250 hectares are replanted in the same period of time, said Martinez.

This restocking rate has been achieved over the last two years, and it is expected to continue over the coming years, according to Martinez' statements at the 2nd S.O.S Toa River Round Table that will session until April 11 in the city of Baracoa, Guantanamo Province.

The meeting marks the 85th anniversary of the birth of the scientist Antonio Nuñez Jimenez (1923-1998), who is considered the fourth discoverer of Cuba and was a firm defender of the Toa River preservation.

Nuñez warned of the threat posed by the mineral deposits to the pure and crystal clear waters of the Toa River. After this statement, the mining exploration works were stopped to give way to a study of the environmental impact in the river area, particularly in the Piloto deposit, located in the south of the Moa mountain range.

The meeting is organized by the Antonio Núñez Jiménez Nature and Mankind Foundation, in coordination with the Fund for World Nature WWW- Canada, the National Council of Water Basins and Environmental Control, among other institutions.
