With the conference "University Extension: The Challenge of Liberation Solidarity," Frei Betto and others called on universities to reject their exclusivist models and take part in the social processes underway in Latin America.
"Cuba is an example of university extension," said the Brazilian scholar, noting how the island sends brigades of professionals to over 100 foreign nations.
A panel noted that university extension means learning how to think and care, to be supportive and take actions to build a better, more just and peaceful world.
"A university extension program must have well defined objectives related to research and teaching; it must have an organizational purpose, and it must convey education by means of any ways of communication available and long-distance education," said Betto.
