Remirez noted the former general secretary of the Chilean Communist Partys internationalist efforts and solidarity with Cuba.

At the former Chilean Congress building, Remírez, Cuban Ambassador to Chile Giraldo Mazola; Nestor León, of the Central Committee staff; and Fernando García Bielsa, political advisor, took part in the honor guard alongside the casket draped in the flag of the Chilean Communist Party.
