Research on Chronic Kidney Failure in Cuba
Experts in the special municipality of Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth) carried out an epidemiological study on chronic kidney failure.

The research, which was acknowledged with the 2007 National Health Grand Award, involved 97 percent of the population of the municipality, including children and senior citizens.

The study showed that 18.5 percent of people are at risk to suffer from chronic kidney failure or other vascular affections.

The experts took into consideration the risk factors and the relation with other chronic diseases such as cardiovascular and cerebral-vascular problems, diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure.

The study on that Cuban community was coordinated by the Nephrology Institute and was carried out by the health system in Isla de la Juventud.
