More than 3,200 Uruguayans have joined the literacy campaign carried out by the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) using the Cuban teaching method "Yo, si puedo.".

MIDES director of Assistance to Groups and Vulnerable Populations Yamandu Ferraz said 247 qualified teachers are participating in this activity, each of whom teaches about 13 illiterate students.

The campaign is now in its first stage, since according to the MIDES census almost 20 percent of Uruguayan adults are functionally or totally illiterate.

In successive steps, by the end of 2008, the plan is for all Uruguayans to learn to read and write, to declare Uruguay free of illiteracy.

In an interview with Prensa Latina, Ferraz recalled that the current work is based on a pilot plan implemented in several provinces, thanks to which 132 Uruguayans over 18 years old learned to read and write.
