President Michelle Bachelet presented the Pablo Neruda Order of Merit to Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, bringing to three the number of Cuban intellectuals recognized by Chilean authorities this year.

In July, the Pablo Neruda Ibero-American Poetry Prize was given to Cuban poet, essayist Fina Garcia Marruz, and in November, the Jose Donoso Ibero-American Literature Prize was awarded to writer, researcher Miguel Barnet.

In a ceremony at La Moneda Palace on Friday, Bachelet described Brouwer as "a fundamental musician of Our America" and his work as "a sign of profound cultural crossbreeding, a synthesis of creation diversity and adventure."

The Cuban artist, who is author of over 600 works and has won numerous prizes, appreciated the award, referring to the profound influence of Jose Marti throughout his life and artistic record. "He is always present," said Brouwer.
