AIDS
Cuba will devote World AIDS Day (December 1st) to highlighting the work of volunteer activists in prevention, announced Gloria Pausada, a specialist from the AIDS prevention and control program.

The volunteer movement, created since the start of the epidemic in the Island, grew through participation of patients themselves, who spent part of their time visiting workplaces, schools and other institutions to increase public awareness about everything regarding AIDS.

They were joined later by students, workers and housewives, and the country currently boasts thousands of promoters and advisers in HIV prevention.

Motivations behind the work of these volunteers include human values, altruism, solidarity, personal risk situations and the HIV impact on friends, partners and families, said Pausada in a press conference, adding that activities in the national program will be stepped up on December 1st.
