A National Conference on Workplace Safety and Health is being held in Cuba organized by the union movement and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MTSS).
Esther Marquez, head of the Workplace Safety and Health Department at the MTSS, said that the money to purchase protection equipment for workers is now included in company budgets, based on the belief that such expenditures are not expenses, but necessary investments in the most important capital the country has: people.

"We are also working," she said, "to control all the events linked to work accidents, that is, interruptions that could cause or have caused injures to workers.
More than 200 businesses are currently implementing the Cuban norms of Workplace Safety and Health; 34 of them have already requested the certification.

From the beginning of 2007 to the end of September 2007, 62 people have died in Cuba in workplace accidents "10 less than last year for the same time period. However, the number of injured workers increased.
