Cuba's heath system is testing new drugs as part of authorities' efforts to improve medical care.

One of those actions is the controlled administration of skin growth factor contained in HEBERPROT-P in angiology and vascular surgery.

The drug is being administered in several hospitals in the eastern Cuban province of Camagüey.

The medication has benefited diabetic patients suffering from leg lesions to prevent major amputations.

The drug is made at the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (CIGB) and production is monitored by the National Center for Coordination of Clinical Trials (CNCEC).

The drug has been successfully administered to diabetic patients, thus preventing the use of aggressive treatments such as amputations.
