Cuban Tae Kwon Do artist to the Pan American championship in Cali
The Cuban gold medalist in the 80 kg division at 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, Angel Valodia Matos, will participate in the Pan American Tae kwon do championship in Cali, in Colombia from December 7 to 9. This is a qualifying event for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
This will be Matos' second opportunity to qualify, after having finished without medal at the recently concluded pre-Olympic international championship held in the English city of Manchester.
National commissioner Jose Barrientos said Matos is in top shape and has a good chance at qualifying this time.
Barrios said Yaimara Rosario and Mirna Echevarria are the main candidates in Colombia's competition in the 57 kg and the 67 kg divisions.
Cuba has guaranteed its participation in Tae kwon do at the Olympic Games with Dianellis Montejo, 49 kg, and Gessler Viera, world champion in the 68 kg weight class.
