Cuba remarks ALBA gains in health and education
Cuba"s Foreign Investment and Economic Collaboration Minister Marta Lomas reported to the Cuban Legislature"s International Relations Committee on the course of several programs of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas (ALBA) on Monday

The minister reviewed all steps since the 2000 signing of the first accord by Presidents Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez that created ALBA, a pro-integration project now joined by Bolivia and Nicaragua.

Over 650,000 patients from 30 countries recovered or preserved their vision after being treated as part of Operation Miracle, the Cuban minister told the legislators.

This strengthened cooperation between Havana and Caracas allowed another 15,500 patients, and 12,500 people accompanying them, to benefit from the free treatment program in several Cuban hospitals.

Similarly, she added, there are about 24,000 Cuban health workers in the poorest Venezuelan neighborhoods, with Cuban cooperation also including the construction of 600 Comprehensive Diagnosis Centers, 600 rehabilitation facilities and 35 High Technology Centers.

Lomas also mentioned cooperation in education through the Cuban "Yo Si Puedo" (Yes, I Can) literacy method, as well as joint ventures in the economic, social and energy fields.
