Yenier Marquez, a defender from the central province of Villa Clara, was named the best Cuban soccer player of 2006, in a ceremony that ended local Soccer Day festivities, held on the 95th anniversary of the first soccer match held in Cuba on December 11, 1911.

Marquez, captain of the Cuban national team, has been outstanding both in the national league and international play in the recent Caribbean Cup, where Cuba was the first team to qualify for the second round.

Coach Raul Gonzalez Triana announced that the national team will start practice on December 22 for the January matches in Trinidad and Tobago, skipping end-of-year vacations. Cuba is currently at 46 in the FIFA world rankings.
