The leader of the US delegation, Arizona Republican Jeff Flake, told reporters the official line was that President Castro will return to public life.

The three-day visit was aimed at improving relations between Havana and Washington, and the delegation was the largest to visit Cuba since its revolution in 1959.

The politicians requested a meeting with acting President Raul Castro, but did not get to see him. He has been running the country since July, when his brother had emergency surgery for an intestinal condition.
