The Havana Film Festival in New York (HFFNY) to render tribute to Cuban actor Jorge Perugorría, who has starred in some of the most successful films from the Ibero American cinema, since his debut in Fresa y chocolate, under the direction of Tomás Gutiérrez Alea and Juan Carlos Tabío.

The 2007 edition of the event, one of the most important Latin festivals that run in NY City, will gather films from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay and United States.

Jorge Luis Sánchez multiawarded first film El Benny, has been selected for the opening of the gathering, which will also include a retro of the films least known in NY, such as Cubas Amor Vertical, by Arturo Sotto, Spains Cosas que dejé en La Habana, by Spanish filmmaker Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón and scriptwritten by Cuban Senel Paz, and documentary Habana Abierta, co-directed by Perugorría himself and Arturo Sotto.

On April 14, the famous Cuban actor will attend the screening of his debut as a filmmaker, with documentary Habana Abierta, and will take part in a dialogue with moviegoers.

The festival of Latin cinema in New York will close with the screening of Ricardo Eliass Os 12 Trabalhos, feature film that won the "Latin Horizons" Award in the San Sebastian International Film Festival and the Third Coral in the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema Festival in Havana.

Other films to be shown during the 2007 HFFNY are "Apocalipsur", by Colombian Javier Mejía, awarded in the Cartagena International Film Festival; "Fuga", by Chilean Pablo Larraín; La perrera, by Uruguayan Manolo Nieto, winner of the Rotterdam Film Festival "Tiger" Award; Ladrones y mentirosos, by Puerto Rican Ricardo Pérez Matta.

The festival will also feature the participation of the Cuban-Spanish co-production La edad de la peseta, by young Cuban director Pavel Giroud, awarded in the Havana Film Festival and winner of the Cartagena de Indias Film Festival, and Cuban Manuel Pérez latest film Páginas del Diario de Mauricio, awarded in the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

Completing the festival participants are Las cruces, by Guatemalan Rafael Rosal; Al final del espectro, by Colombian Juan Felipe Orozco; Dios los junta y ellos se separan, by Colombians Harold Trompetero and Jairo Eduardo Carrillo; Eduardo Raspo with his multiawarded Tatuado, which won awards in the Trieste, Biarritz and Montreal Film Festivals and Mexican Ignacio Ortiz with his film Mezcal; awarded in Malaga and winner of four Ariel Awards of the Mexican Film Academy.

Over 15 filmmakers will attend the 2007 HFFNY and are scheduled to participate in presentations, panels and events open to the public free of charge.
