Tomás Gutierrez Alea

This years London Latin Film Festival, to take place from November 25 to December 3, will pay tribute to the late Cuban director and screenwriter Tomas Guitierrez Alea, a founder of the Cuban Film Institute.

The homage includes the showing of three of Guitierrez films, Memorias del subdesarrollo (Memories of Underdevelopment), Fresa y Chocolate (Strawberries and Chocolate) and Guantanamera.

Titon, as he was known to his friends, died at age 68 on April 16, 1996.

The directors wife, actress and playwright Mirtha Ibarra, will be on hand at the festival to introduce the films and will give a press conference on her husband and the films she starred in.

Ibarra will also present a lecture at the Queen Mary University of London.
