The Marti of Nicosia

Our National Hero will have a place dedicated to his memory in the capital of this island filled of history.

The outstanding Cuban sculptor José Villa Soberón worked for almost a month, under the blazing sun, in the creation of a monument to José Marti which will soon be located in an urban space near the Cuban Embassy. In the town of Santa Barbara, at 20 kilometres of this capital, we find the artist covered with a white dust that contrasted with the reddish skin of his body "suntanned" by the sun.

By his side, the formerly Cypriot stone had already become a beautiful star and inside it, started to take shape by the magic of art, the face of the Teacher... And although we all know the creator is somewhat laconic, he overflowed the words to speak about this important experience that adds up to many others works "established" around the world, and of course, in Cuba.

From the very first moment I knew I was coming to do this job, he told, I began to think what could I do on the stone in a relatively short time, and among the possibilities appeared the idea of creating a monument with a symbolic character, aside the traditional bust of Marti which is common in many cities.
