Tinajon-Camaguey

The former village Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe, today Camagüey, is getting ready to celebrate soon (February 2nd) the 493rd anniversary of its foundation.

Andrés Morales Leal, President of the Municipal Assembly of the Peoples Power (Mayor) told in a press conference that a pilgrimage to the site where the city was founded in Punta de Guincho, Nuevitas, is one of the actions foreseen for the date.

Likewise, the city will dress up to hold the First Meeting of Radio stations belonging to the first seven villages founded in Cuba; that is, Baracoa, Santiago de Cuba, Bayamo, Santa María del Puerto de Príncipe, Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad, San Cristóbal de La Habana.

A floral wreath to the Camagueyan hero Ignacio Agramonte, the traditional Solemn Assembly, the awarding ceremony of the Distinction 493rd anniversary of the city, and other social events after the reading of the Bando (edict) that inaugurates the culture week (February 1-7) are contained in the schedule.

This commemoration will reach to its end with a concert by popular musician and composer Adalberto Álvarez at the Plaza de los Trabajadores.

Morales Leal also congratulated the people from Camaguey, for their great effort and fidelity to the Revolution, and commented on the good yields in the commercial production, the productivity and the low index of infant mortality (4,6 death per 1000 live births) among other indicators that reveal a higher overall social development reached this year due to the unlimited response of the locals.

Later, the City Mayor said that the celebration of the 493rd anniversary of the city is the prelude of the celebration for the 500th birthday of the so-called City of the Tinajones.
