Posada Carriles
International terrorist of Cuban origin, Luis Posada Carriles, the mastermind behind the blast of a Cubana airplane killing all 73 people on board in 1976, pleaded not guilty to immigration fraud charges, on Monday. Under heavy security measures, Posada, was transferred for the hearing from the Otero county jail in New Mexico, to El Paso, Texas.

Posada Carriles's curriculum also includes several attempts made on the life of Cuban President Fidel Castro, and terrorist actions carried out inside Cuba, resulting in one death and numerous injuries.

Media reports state that Posada's lawyer, Felipe DJ Millan, asked that his client's bail hearing to be postponed until February 1st., which , coincidentally, is the dateline for the prosecutors to justify Posada's detention.

Millan argued that he needed time to go over the 400 plus pages of incriminating evidence produced by the prosecution, reports French News Agency, AFP .

However, under US law, Posada could be detained indefinitely if he were charged with terrorism. But, many believe that the prosecution has refused to do so ecause it would mean revealing US involvement in many of the former CIA operative's criminal activities.

Posada has been charged only with lying to immigration authorities while applying for citizenship. He claimed that he had entered the United States illegally by walking across the Mexican border in 2005, whereas the prosecution charges that he entered the United States on board the Santrina scrimping boat with his accomplices.

Meanwhile, Posada's benefactor and accused terrorist himself, Santiago Alvarez, and his accomplice, Osvaldo Mitat, were held in contempt of court for refusing to testify against Posada.

The two are serving time on a conviction for possessing a cache of army weapons they had planned to use in terrorists actions against Cuba.
