New promising horizon for sugar cane in Cuba
Cuba's Sugar Cane Research Institute (INICA) director, Ignacio Santana, asserted the competitiveness of this branch, and said a new stage is open for the sector to still play a very important role in the economy.

Sugar cane "is reviving with new force, spirit and technology, and world sugar prices are relatively high," he pointed out on Wednesday.

Santana opened a series of scientific events taking place from Wednesday through Saturday at America Plaza Convention Center in Varadero, 87 miles east of Havana.

About 200 representatives of seven nations are attending the INICA event that includes eight conferences and six workshops in two working committees, besides poster sessions.

The event will demonstrate our high technology, because sugarcane development decreased for purely economic reasons, not for lack of technology, science or staff, he explained.

Delegates from Ecuador, Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, Belize, Iran and the host are participating, with Argentina and Dominican Republic expected.
