Silvio Rodríguez, Cuban singer and songwriter, said he was happy and moved upon his arrival to Lima 21 years after his last performance in the Peruvian capital, a period he agreed was too long an absence.

The artist made the statement in the midst of Vivas to Cuba and President Fidel Castro, shouted by hundreds of young people gathered to welcome him at the Jorge Chavez international airport.

With the modesty which distinguishes him, Silvio walked toward the security barrier holding back the youth, shook hands, thanked them and even received a letter from a group of young boys which he accompanied in the applause.

He seemed barely tired after the long flight from the island, for his smile only showed joy and emotion.

What can I say, he said, I am very happy and greatly moved by returning to Peru after so many years, he explained and recalled he was last here in 1986, when he took part in a Latin American cultural gathering.

At the air terminal he was also received by representatives of the Cuban Embassy in Lima and hundreds of youth that came from far localities as Huaycan, a popular district 15 miles from Lima.

Banners with President Fidel Castro's image and solidarity slogans as well as a forest of Cuban flags completed the warm welcome given to Silvio in Lima.

The artist dedicated the rest of the day to relaxing and preparing for the concert he will offer Wednesday at the Jockey Plaza auditorium, an enormous commercial mall, considered one of the greatest artistic events of the year in Peru.

All tickets to the event were bought out by Silvio fans of three generations who will unite under the spell of his songs.

The singer and poet will remain in Lima until Sunday, although he doesn't plan on another performance before he continues to Chile, where he will give three concerts.
