Casa de las Américas
After 40 years of the 1st International Protest Song Meeting, sponsored by Casa de las Americas, this cultural institution will celebrate the 1st International Meeting on the Necessary Song.

Likewise, the "Pablo de la Torriente Brau" Cultural Center will add forces to this event in order to open the song days within the 2007 International Cubadisco Fair, which kicked off in Havana on May 19.

This time, organizers expect the participation of Cubans Silvio Rodriguez and Sara Gonzalez, Uruguayan Daniel Viglietti, Dominicans Victor Victor and Jose Antonio Rodriguez and Argentine Cesar Isella, among others.

The program at Casa de las Americas will run from May 22 up until Saturday 26 with documentary screenings, concerts and a meeting among singer-songwriters. Participants of this last gathering will reflect on the musical creation committed to the social changes and the highest aesthetic concerns.

The idea of this meeting joins the need to launch an announcement that will call to the creation of a movement of alternative record companies, which favor quality over the commercial thing.

This idea also targets the promotion of the necessary song, identified with the preservation of the patrimonial values and the expression of the authentic popular sensitivity.

According to organizers, the event will include tributes to Chilean Victor Jara, Cuban Noel Nicola and Venezuelan Ali Primera.

Among the audiovisuals to be screened are the documentaries dedicated to Maria Bethania (Brazil), Victor Jara, Noel Nicola and Ali Primera.

The concert branch will allow the meeting with singer-songwriters and groups from Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Chile, Uruguay, Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

On the other hand, Casa de las Americas "Mariano" Gallery will open its doors to an exhibit on Venezuelan craftwork.
