Fidel's 80th Anniversary

Outstanding intellectuals Jorge Enrique Adoum of Ecuador and Thiago de Mello, of Brazil were the first to arrive over the weekend in Havana, out of more than 1,000 personalities from over 70 countries to attend celebrations for the 80th birthday of Cuban President Fidel Castro.

Enrique Adoum told ACN that he was very pleased to visit Cuba once again and join the activities organized by the Guayasamin Foundation to mark Fidel Castro's birthday. Meanwhile, Brazilian poet Thiago de Mello arrived in Havana on Sunday, along with Federico Mayor Zaragoza and Felipe Gonzalez Marquez of Spain, Danielle Mitterrand (France), and Nobel Peace Laureates Rigoberta Menchu and Aldofo Perez Esquivel who among others make up the Celebration's Honor Committee.

Outstanding men and women of culture, science and politics have confirmed their participation in the different activities that will run from November 28th through December 1st in the Cuban capital.

The birthday celebrations include a concert at Havana's Jose Marti Anti-imperialist Outdoor Arena, an exhibit of paintings by the late Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamin, and a colloquium on Fidel's concepts of solidarity and internationalism.

The sons of Oswaldo Guayasamin and other members of the Guayasamin Foundation are already in Havana putting the finishing touches to the different activities included in the celebrations.
