The 46th contingent of the Finland-Cuba Solidarity Association, part of the Nordic Brigade, has kicked off a 15-day voluntary work season on the island.

Association secretary Miia Komppa told ACN that since its creation, more than 40 years ago, her organization has spread information on Cuban reality so that people around the world know about life on the island.

Along teaching Spanish language, Cuban cuisine, music and traditions, association members have also let people know about political and social programs which Cuba has undertaken. They have also helped in agricultural and construction voluntary work seasons on the island, said the Finnish activist.

The associations 46th working contingent, made up of 40 members, was welcomed on Monday by the vice-president of the Cuban Friendship Institute Elio Gamez.

The Finland-Cuba Friendship Association is made up of more than 1000 Finnish citizens from all social trends and with strong solidarity and justice feelings for the Cuban people, said Komppa.

One of the causes, which the Finnish and Nordict activists strongly support, is the demand for the immediate release of the five Cuban antiterrorist fighters held in US jails, she said and added that her organization has set up a committee to further support the demand in favor of Gerardo Hernández, Fernando González, Antonio Guerrero, Ramón Labañino and René González, known as The Cuban Five.

Other solidarity actions undertaken by the Finnish organization include the implementation and financing of joint cooperation-for-development projects with local production entities and teaching centers, said Komppa.
