Cubadisco Orchestra

One of the most awaited concerts of Cubadisco 2007 took place on the event when the Cubadisco Orchestra played a concert devoted to movie soundtracks.

Roberto Valera, the orchestras conductor, said that the idea for the concert came from Ciro Benemelis, president of Cubadiscos Organizing Committee, after the committee decided to dedicate this years event to movie soundtracks.

Valera spoke about the hard work they had to do as the Cubadisco Orchestra is literally a virtual group. The orchestra only meets once a year to perform concerts like this one and is formed by musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra, the Cuban Radio and Television Orchestra and the National Concert Band.

After so many years of movies, even during the silent-film era when images were accompanied by a musician playing the piano, there has been a countless amount of music written for the big screen. This made the selection of 14 tracks a daunting task that required the specialized help of Jorge Calderon, a cinema expert, and Adrian Rodriguez Valera.

The first track counted with the participation of Cuban guitarist Rosa Matos who masterly interpreted Un dia de noviembre, by Cuban composer Leo Brouwer, one of the emblematic artists of Cuban music. Cubadisco 2007 paid special tribute to Brouwer for his contribution to movie soundtracks, ever since he founded Grupo de Experimentación Sonora del ICAIC (ICAICs sound experimentation group).

Other performances included the tracks of Beauty and the Beast, Currucucu paloma, written by Tomas Mendez, the unforgettable music of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Casablanca, The Pink Panter, Souls in Conflict, Black Orpheus, The Godfather, The Day You Love Me and Mission Impossible.

From Cuban composers who have participated in movie productions, the Cubadisco Orchestra played a piece of music composed by Carlos Farinas for the film Habanera, by filmmaker Pastor Vega, a soundtrack composed by Valera himself for the documentary Che, hoy y siempre (Che, today and forever) by Pedro Chasquel; and Columna Juvenil del Centenario(Youth Column of the Centenary) composed by Silvio Rodriguez for the documentary with the same title by Miguel Torres, which was interpreted by singer-song writer Diego Gutierrez and pop signer Dayani Lozano.
