Culture and Development Congress opens in Havana

The Fifth International Culture and Development Congress opens Monday in Havana with a focus on defending and promoting cultural diversity.

The forum takes place through Thursday, June 14, and brings together some 600 scholars, artists and writers from some 30 countries.

Participants will discuss the role of the cultural industries and the perspectives for integration in an effort to preserve national identities in the face of external impositions. The program also includes an international gathering on the preservation of patrimony.

Another related event taking place in Havana is the Cuban stage of the First Itinerant Showing of Caribbean Films, opening Monday at the Charles Chaplin Theater.

One of the topics for discussion at the Culture and Development Congress is regional strategies for collaboration and integration in cinema and audiovisuals.
