Initiated with a ceremony in the historic eastern city of Bayamo, where the Cuban National Anthem was first sung in 1868, Cubans today marked National Culture Day.

Neighbors of all ages gathered at a local square where the municipal band and choir interpreted the original and current versions of the anthem.

During the ceremony, 88 recent graduates from the provincial arts school received their diplomas, increasing to 556 the number of such professionals who have completed their studies at that center.

On behalf of the graduates, Darvis Torres said that they will work tirelessly bring knowledge, culture and recreation to all corners of the eastern territory.

Art school director Juan Luis Nogueiras said the graduates will serve in elementary and high schools.

During preparations for the first Cuban war against Spanish colonial rule, independence leader Perucho Figueredo wrote the Bayamesa war anthem, on August 14, 1867.

On June 1868, a band interpreted the music of what would become the Cuban National Anthem, and on October 20, 1868 the people of the city of Bayamo sang the lyrics of the anthem during the siege of the city by the independence fighters. But the official interpretation of the anthem was created on November 8, 1968, though it was declared Cuba's National Anthem in 1899, after the end of the anti-colonial wars.
