Leinier Dominguez
Cuban Grandmaster Leinier Domínguez was crowned champion of the 2006 International Chess Tournament after beating Ukrainian veteran Vassily Ivanchuk, ranked sixth in the world.

Dominguez, ranked 52nd internationally and with a nation-leading ELO of 2,655, sealed his final victory after 69 moves of a Modern Opening, finishing the tournament with 8 of 9 possible points, with seven victories and two draws.

This victory marks Domínguez best showing since finishing eighth at the 2004 FIDE World Chess Champions in Tripoli.

Finishing behind Dominguez Leinier were, GM Vassily Ivanchuk (UKR), 6.5; GM Oleg Korneev (RUS); 5.5; GM Viktor Bologan (MOL), 5; GM Marc Narciso (SPA), 4.5; GM Fernando Peralta (ARG), 4; GM Julio Granda (PER), 4; MI Jose M. López (SPA), 3.5; GM Jan Timman (HOL); 2.5; MI Juan A. Lacasa (SPA), 2.

Meanwhile at the 2006 Calvia Chess Festival in Mallorca, Spain, Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon beat British GM Stuart Conquest in the eighth round and is currently sitting with six points tied with seven others for second place. The tournament wraps up today.
