Cuba will face Russia today in the first leg of two matches of the qualifying group of the World Volleyball League taking place at the Ciudad Deportiva in Havana.
After defeating Egypt last week with scoreboards marking 3-1 and 3-0, the Cuban men team will be facing a much stronger team on Friday, as the Russians finished in seventh place in the World Championship in Japan.

The technical director of the team Orlando Samuels said he expects the Cuban team to improve on its position compared to the 15th place they got in Japan. The selection for the League has been boosted with young players, who are expected to improve their performance during the League.

The Russian team, which won 4th place on the last world league, arrived in Havana last Thursday evening holding two victories over Serbia.
Cuba and Russia are heading group C, with two triumphs and no defeats, over Egypt and Serbia respectively.

The rest of the teams in the League will be resting today, as the coming matches between Brazil and Finland, in group A, Italy-France and US-Japan, in B, and Poland-Argentina, in group D, have been scheduled for Saturday.

Bulgaria is the only team in the League remaining undefeated, not dropping a set so far, while Argentineans prop up the league with no victories.
