Cuba places second in Women's Montreux Volley Masters
After beating the Netherlands in semifinals in straight sets (25-14, 25-23, 25-19), the Cuban team fell to China in the finale also in straight sets 14-25, 17-25 and 18-25.
This was Cuba's second defeat at the hands of China this season as they also lost in a tournament held earlier this month in the Chinese city of Wuxi. The Cubans also have two victories against China this year. The first was at the Beilun Cup in that Chinese city and the second one was in the preliminary stage of the Volley Masters event when the island's squad won in five hard-fought sets.
In the match for the bronze medals, the Netherlands beat Serbia 3-1 while Germany downed Turkey in straight sets and placed fifth.
Cubans Nancy Carrillo and Rosir Calderón led the attack in the tournament while Zoila Barros was the best server.
The Cuban team will now continue their preparation for the upcoming Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Prior to that, they will participate in the 6th Pan American Cup, scheduled for June 20-29 in Colima, Mexico, an event that will grant tickets for next year's Grand Prix.
