Social assistants
By Mary Luz Borrego

Over 1 200 old or handicapped persons who live by themselves in the Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus have been benefited with the home-social assistant program which began to be applied in 2002 following a national genetic study on human disability.

Edilia Carballo, vice-director of social security in this territory told Escambray about the results of the program and explained the duties of the assistants who are not supposed to replace the familys and are assigned only when the requests match the set requirements.

Home-social assistance has become a new job possibility specially for unemployed or retired women from 18 to 65 years old who are paid a salary and must follow a training course, among other requisites.

Once admitted, the assistants are given the same considerations and have the same rights as the rest of the workers.
