Yo si puedo
Misquito and Mayangna indigenous peoples of the Nicaraguan Atlantic coast will be taught how to write and read in their own languages, supported with the Cuban literacy method Yo Si Puedo, Orlando Pineda, coordinator of the program said.

According to the Nicaraguan educator, the Misquito program is ready with 40 classes as that language has just three vowels and 14 consonants.

He added that they are working at full speed to adapt the program in Mayangna.

Pineda explained that in both cases indigenous of the Nicaraguan Atlantic coast helped in the translation and supported the recording of videos that complement the Cuban teaching method.

This campaign, which will be buttressed by the Sandinista government of Daniel Ortega from 2007, aims at declaring Nicaragua a territory free of illiteracy by Aug 2008.

The National Institute of Statistics and Census of Nicaragua disclosed that the nation has over a million illiterate people, and UNESCO affirms that 35 percent of the population cannot read.
