The care and conservation of biodiversity constitutes a state priority in Cuba, where decontamination of the bays is part of the program of environmental protection, an environmental expert explained on Monday.

Frank Ocana, expert from the Holguin Center of Research and Environmental and Technological Services, told the weekly Trabajadores that there is marked improvement in the quality of the waters of Nipe Bay, the largest in that eastern province.

He explained that since 2005, a project of conservation and protection of biodiversity has been implemented for the deposits of the Mayari, Nipe, Juan Vicente and Tacajo rivers, which two sugarcane centrals then use for irrigation and fertilization.

It is very important, said Ocana, to preserve marine flora and fauna of coves, where residents are able to fish from the banks.

Sources from the Bay and Coast Environmental Engineering Center indicated similar work to reduce pollution is currently being carried out in Havana Bay, with support of UN agencies.
