John Lennon
By Michel Hernández
An outdoor rock concert took place Sunday afternoon in Havana to remember John Lennon on the 26th anniversary of his assassination.

The event was sponsored by the Cuban chapter of the In Defense of Humanity Network and chaired by Minister of Culture Abel Prieto and Omar Gonzalez, who heads the Cuban Film Institute.

The groups playing included: Mezcla, Viento Solar, Aceituna Sin Hueso, Dagoberto Pedraja and Roca de Almendra, Los Kents, Gens, Síntesis, and guitarists Luis Manuel Molina, Alejandro Valdez and Chila from Mexico.

The two hour concert, hosted by Guille Vilar, recalled Lennon and his political commitment at a time when protests against the war in Iraq are growing and Latin American integration advances.

The concert had a backdrop of an enormous painting by Cuban artist Waldo Saavedra with the face of Lennon amidst the clouds, also present on the T-shirts of many of the performers.
