Lt. Col. Victor Ibo Acuna Velazquez, murdered while trying to prevent a plane hijacking yesterday, was buried Friday at the Pantheon to Martyrs fallen in defense of the homeland, at Pinar del Rio municipal cemetery

The burial was attended by Div. Gen. Jose Carrillo Gomez, member of the Cuban Communist Party (PCC) Central Committee and head of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) Political Division and Pinar del Rio PCC First Secretary Olga Lidia Tapia Iglesias.

Tribute was rendered by FAR s ceremonial unit and the General Staff band, together with his family and comrades-in-arms.

Col. Eusebio Cordero Sierra, head of his unit, said that Acuna Velazquez died as he lived, with exceptional human quality, zeal and care in fulfilling his duty.

In his short life, the late lieutenant colonel excelled in the defense of the Revolution, preservation of national peace and was an unyielding enemy of US imperialism.

For his courage in frustrating a terrorist attack stimulated by the US Cuban Adjustment Act, and at the request of FAR Minister Army Gen. Raul Castro, the Council of States of Cuba awarded him postmortem the Antonio Maceo Medal for Bravery.
