Cuba-Barrientos Athletics Cup
Athletes from at least 14 countries will compete in the Cuba-Barrientos Athletics Cup from May 24-27 at the Pan American Stadium in Havana.

The countries with athletes in the competition are: Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Antigua, Bahamas, Barbados, Colombia, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Trinidad Tobago, the United States and Venezuela.

Jesus Molina, Cuban Track and Field Federation technical director, told the ACN news agency that the event will be a chance to see the best Cuban athletes in action before the July Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Olympic Champions Osleidys Menendez (javelin) and Yumileidi Cumba (shot-put) are heading the group of 78 pre-selected athletes seeking to be on the Cuban team for Rio.

Other top Cuban athletes include Yipsi Moreno (hammer), runner-up at Athens 2004; Yoandri Betanzos and Yargelis Savigne (triple jump), silver medalists at the Helsinki World Championship; Victor Moya, a silver medalist in the high jump, Daimi Pernia (400 m hurdles), and Ivan Pedroso (long jump) and Anier Garcia (110 m hurdles), both gold medalists at Sydney 2000.

Zulia Calatayud, winner of the 800 meters in the Helsinki 2005 World Championship, is now in training but will not be participating in the Cuba-Barrientos event as she is suffering from recurrent muscle cramps.

Following Rio de Janeiro, the next major commitment for the Cuban track and field athletes will be the World Championship in Osaka, Japan from August 25 to Sept 2.
