The light flyweight Joahnys Argilagos took revenge against Mexican Joselito Velazquez to provide the first of the seven belts with which Cuba led the continental boxing tournament staged in Venezuela.
Argilagos, who is only 18, had lost twice versus the double Pan American monarch, the last one in the final of Toronto, but showed ease and speed in the bout and received the verdict of the judges.
Cuba reached this match with its 10 men qualified for the universal contest in October and its performance included also victories by featherweight Andy Cruz and super heavyweight Lenier Peró who defeated the Dominican Hector Garcia and local Edgar Muñoz, respectively.
The Cuban golden harvest also included wins by light welterweight Yasnier Toledo, middleweight Arlen Lopez, welterweight Roniel Iglesias and cruiser Erislandy Savon.
