The legendary Cuban runner Alberto Juantorena was elected on Wednesday vice president of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), as part of a congress of this organization which takes place in Beijing.
The idol of the tracks had the idea of occupying that position since long before 2007, when he was about to present his candidacy but withdrew at the last minute. However, he was the candidate who achieved the most votes and also stands as the only Latin American who has reached the highest offices of the IAAF. Britain's Sebastian Coe, also ex runner, was appointed as president of the organization.
Currently, Juantorena chairs the Cuban Athletics Federation and will share his new role as VP of the IAAF with the Qatari Dahlan Al Ahmad, the Ukrainian Sergei Bubka and Cameroon Hamad Kalkaba.
