Secretary of State, John Kerry, is preparing for his historic visit to Cuba on Friday. When he arrives in Havana on August 14, Kerry will become the first head of US diplomacy on travel to Cuba in 70 years, since 1945.
His brief visit back and forth on the same day will mark an important step in diplomatic relations, resumed on July 20 after 54 years broken and must now move towards full normalization, with many outstanding issues.
The US embassy in Havana began operating as such on July 20, but has postponed any celebration until the arrival of Kerry, who will lead a ceremony where the US flag at the mission for the first time in 56 years will be raised.
