Despite having limitations to reach Cuba by their country, the arrival of US visitors to the island increased by 54% in the period from January to July, thanks to the historic thaw between Havana and Washington.
A working paper by economist and professor at the Faculty of Tourism, Jose Luis Perello, said Cuba reached 88.996 Americans among January 1st to July 26 2015, the first seven months of the bilateral diplomatic normalization after 50 years rupture.
The figure does not include the arrival of the Cuban Americans, which according to the expert was of 164.368 people in the same period from January to July.
"According to my preliminary calculations and considering the current scenario, 2015 could close with more than 3.5 million international visitors, including about 145,000 Americans, 50,000 more than those who arrived in 2014," said Perello.
"For the rest of the year we expected the same trend of growth because of the events scheduled on August 14, with the opening of the US Embassy in Havana and the visit of Pope Francis in September," added Perelló, for whom these events will generate more visits and media visibility.
According to him, the potential of tourism to Cuba is huge.
