King Juan Carlos 1st would be seriously considering a trip to Cuba, according to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, and he told it the government of the nation. It would be a special visit of the monarch, who abdicated a year ago, as this was the only Latin American country he did not officially visit in his 39-year reign.
Although he was in Havana in 1999 during the Ibero-American Summit, Presidents José María Aznar and Zapatero did not bet on his return to the island, and the issue was put on ice until in recent months a new dialogue path between Cuba and the rest of the world was opened.
The initiative, as indicated by this newspaper, is endorsed by some businessmen with investments on the island, mainly in hotels, who have invited him to make a private visit. For that reason Juan Carlos has transferred his interest to the Government waiting for its approval, as well as that of his son, King Philip 6th, to finalize the trip, although there is not an exact date and government sources say that he will have "to keep waiting".
