Cuba is willing to buy seeds to the United States but will not accept transgenic ones because it cannot control its bio-safety and rejects any marketing restrictions imposed by producers.
"The policy of the country so far is not to negotiate with anyone producing transgenic seeds," said during a press conference Manuel Rodríguez, director of the state-owned Enterprise Producer and Marketer of Seeds, the only one authorized to purchase this product on the island.
The company annually imports about 12,000 tons of seeds -for about $ 11 million-and plans to produce about 10,000 tons in 2015 that include flowers, herbs and grasses.
The state company has 997 contracts with seed producers throughout the country that this year will plant 4,680 hectares. The seeds that cannot be produced on the island are currently obtained from Italy, Holland, Belgium and Canada, among other nations.
