Alberto Juantorena, president of the Cuban Athletics Federation and former Olympic champion in men’s 400 and 800 meters (Montreal 1976 ), will attend the Ponce Athletics Grand Prix starting on Saturday May 23 in Puerto Rico, reports the web site elnuevodia.com.
The State Department of the United States "reconsidered its position and on Tuesday gave the approval" to the Cuban sports official, said the source.
Juantorena, member of the Executive Council of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will arrive in Puerto Rico on Thursday along with the rest of the Cuban delegation.
According to Victor Lopez, technical director of the Ponce Athletics Grand Prix, "the combination of efforts we undertook made possible they to give him a visa". He explained that he made contact with US coach Vin Lannana, who had managed that in 2014 Juantorena to receive a visa to attend a sporting activity in Eugene, Oregon.
