Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu started a tour that will take him to Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua, the main Latin American allies of the Kremlin.

"This is the first visit to these countries of Shoigu as defense minister," said Gen. Igor Konashenkov, military spokesman, to local agencies.

Shoigu, named in November 2012 in front of that portfolio by Russian President Vladimir Putin, during his Latin American tour will address issues of defense and military-technical cooperation.

The Russian minister will meet Wednesday in Caracas with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his colleague Vladimir Godfather.

During his stay in Venezuela Shoigu address issues of regional and global security, the spokesman added.

Then Shoigu will travel to Nicaragua, a country like Venezuela recognized the independence of Georgian breakaway republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and Cuba, traditional Russian ally since Soviet times.
